The Story: Mountain Devil Lizard Dreaming tells the story of Arnkerrth, the Mountain Devil Lizard, also known as the Thorny Devil Lizard. Arnkerrth travelled across the vast regions of Atnangker Country in the Utopia region, north-east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, these journeys defined the landscape and created sacred sites. The longer lines in the painting represent the tracks created during Arnkerrthe’s journey. The Anmatyerre and Alyawerre people of Utopia believe that the lizard carries coloured ochre (natural earth pigments) in a sack around its neck and is responsible for the distribution of ochre throughout the desert landscape.
