Mountain Devil Lizard Dreaming

Roseanne Morton Pwerle

Size: 200 x 130 cm

The Story: Devil Mountain Lizard Dreaming is the Dreaming story of the Arnkerrth, the Mountain Devil Lizard (also known as Thorny Devil Lizard). Arnkerrth travelled the vast regions of Atnangker Country in the Utopia region (north east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory) defining the landscape and identifying sacred sites. The longer lines in the painting represent the tracks created during Arnkerrthe’s journey. The Anmatyerre and Alyawerre people of Utopia believe that the lizard carries coloured ochre (natural earth pigments) in a sack around its neck and is responsible for the distribution of ochre throughout the desert landscape.
