The Artist: Jocelyn Norris and Jason Baker Watson (Collaboration)

The Story: Jocelyn Norris and Jason Baker Watson are artists from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in remote northwestern South Australia.

This collaborative piece by Jocelyn and Jason depicts two women performing a water ceremony, both using their voices and Nulla Nullas to unearth water. A Nulla Nulla is a traditional Aboriginal hardwood club and is used for hunting, digging, warfare, and ceremonies.

The women dig for water with their Nulla Nulla’s while singing to summon it from beneath the sand dunes and rock holes. Once they discover water, they remove their basket-like hats and use the baskets to collect the water.
