The Story: The anaty, a desert yam or bush potato, is an important food source for Aboriginal people in Central Australia. It thrives in woodland areas near water sources. Its root system can stretch up to twelve metres from the stalk, and it has bright green leaves and yellow flowers. The yams are harvested from beneath the ground. Jeannie paints vibrant, long brushstrokes symbolising the plant’s flowers and the vegetable itself, while the intricate white dots represent the yam’s seeds. The women of Utopia, Central Australia, honour the yam through paintings and ceremonies, performing songlines and dance cycles that show respect for their land and ensure the ongoing regeneration of the desert yam.
